Martin Luther King Jr said “I still have a dream, a dream deeply rooted in the American dream – one day this nation will rise up and live up to its creed, “We hold these truths to be self-evident: that all men are created equal.” I have a dream …”
Those words resonated around the world. A man of principle and high moral character his personal belief “I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the colour of their skin, but by the content of their character. I have a dream today!”
His belief stemmed from a deep-seated focus on the Bible, the Prophets Isaiah and Amos were quote and the words of the Apostle Paul. Have his children seen his dream realized? One has died, and three are now maturely approaching the latter part of their lives. Sadly, the world they see and the country they live in has not responded to the dream positively.
Is His Dream Dead?
The Reverand King was basing his fundamental belief on his desire for God’s Kingdom, the promise he refers to in Isaiah didn’t apply to one country or a world governed by people. Notice how the writer explains at Ecclesiastes 8: 9 “All of this I have seen, and I applied my heart to every work that has been done under the sun, during the time that man has dominated man to his harm.” The reason for the failure Psalm 146: 3 “Do not put your trust in princes Nor in a son of man, who cannot bring salvation. 4 His spirit goes out, he returns to the ground; On that very day his thoughts perish.”
When leaders die they take their good intentions and great dreams with them.
However, as the Psalmist goes on to explain the Reverand King’s dream is not dead, complete the reading of Psalm 146. Justice for all, righteous government, a power that heals the sick and feeds the hungry. The promises in Isaiah that formed much of the dream are focused on the abundance of opportunity for all.
A World Without Borders
Do you reflect on the words of the Lord’s Prayer? Have you considered just what you are asking for? God’s Kingdom, God’s Will to care for the earth. A powerful request, note what the Apostle Peter said at Acts 10: 34 “At this Peter began to speak, and he said: “Now I truly understand that God is not partial,35 but in every nation the man who fears him and does what is right is acceptable to him.36 He sent out the word to the sons of Israel to declare to them the good news of peace through Jesus Christ—this one is Lord of all.“
This isn’t equality, this is justice, this is the identifying mark of Christianity! If we have to rely on the legal system to dictate how we behave towards others we are not demonstrating that we are one of Jesus followers John 13: 35 “By this all will know that you are my disciples—if you have love among yourselves.” John 15: 12 “This is my commandment, that you love one another just as I have loved you.”
Many people have dreamt of something better we have all prayed for or wished for something better, but today, where you are born, determines what opportunities and advantages you have. Some have so much that they could feed a country every year but it piles up in a bank account.
Many years ago I worked with a person who had accumulated wealth and property, two broken marriages and estranged children. By late middle-age they lived in a beautiful property, surrounded by vacant space and work was the only contact with the outside world. Happiness, contentment and companionship were missing. The only reason to get up in the morning was to make more money.
That person determined to get a grip of the reality of life and searched for God.
The Reverand’s dream is dead because it failed to achieve the things he wanted to see in the lifetime of children, but the promises of Gods Kingdom continue to thrill and excite millions around the globe. Why? Because already almost 9 million people live in that dream environment and practice the fundamental requirement they show love. Here are some examples – Videos – Video2, just examples of those who have changed the outcome of their lives today.
Do you share the dream? Would you want to live in a place where justice prevailed and all barriers related to birth, where you live and the colour of your skin has no place then you are seeking God’s Kingdom under the rulership of Jesus Christ? To understand what both Jesus has accomplished already and the dream Reverand Doctor King could see we need to understand who is preventing this from happening, what fight we really have, not with flesh and blood but the spirit of this world and its ruler.
Begin by opening the Bible, ask the hard questions and begin to seek the real answers. Not the tired trite rubbish of the educated elite.
Our lives and our families lives are in our hands, real freedom begins with truth and the Apostle Peter explained where we all stand Acts 10: 34, 35 “And Peter opened his mouth and said “I perceive to a certainty that God is not partial,35 but in every nation he who fears him and practices righteousness is acceptable to him.” Discrimination, segregation and hate start with someone else because there are greater issues at stake than what is going to happen to humanity.
The Bible explains the “Big Picture” – share the dream of a united family of humans serving each other and sharing a real hope for the future.
As we approach MLK jr Day in 2022 discover the truth and embrace true freedom
